On the bottle
Elle is concerned about the risk of being caught in a building fire and being overcome by smoke. To this end, he has taken to occasionally exercising his lungs to prepare them for any onslaught of smoke in case of an emergency.
An interesting device can be made by submerging an adapted plastic bottle in a container of water - traditionally a bucket - and burning some form of dried twigs in the top of the bottle while drawing it out of the water. The concept is a little beyond this researcher (who nearly drowned attempting this trick - don't try this at home, kids).
I will allow Elle to demonstrate his technique, complete with the expression to wear about 2 minutes after performing the task.
After sucking the smoke out of the bottle, you are apparently required to throw your body back and then cough violently for about one minute. Then you can sit back, grin a silly little grin and start rocking quietly in a chair. The problem with this technique for protecting yourself in the event of fire is that he seemed to be asleep within half an hour - surely not a good thing to do in case of an emergency.
